"Health Reform" synonymous with a Single-Payer System

I find it quite grating that so many people use the term 'health reform' synonymously with a single-payer, government-run healthcare system. This is just sloppy and deceptive. It happened several times this morning while I sat through some health policy lectures at school. Opponents of single-payer were labeled as 'opposed to reform'. That's just nonsense. Reform means change. Most everyone agrees that the American healthcare system needs change. But that change or reform can come in infinite forms.

Single-payer is one of many ways that one can reform American healthcare. Supporters of a single-payer system have appropriated the word reform so that they can cast their opposition as regressive, obstructionist supporters of the status quo. If we have any hope of making meaningful, effective changes to American healthcare, we shouldn't dichotomize the debate by using reform to mean single-payer. Knock it off already people.
