Although we're still more than a year out, the usual figures are already lining up to vie for the Republican presidential nomination. So far, the names being floated are Romney, Pawlenty, Sarah Palin, Gingrich, Huckabee, Bachmann, Giuliani, Mitch Daniels and a host of others. To which I say, is this really the best we can do? Do Republicans really like being losers or something? With the exception of Mitch Daniels, none of these people stands a chance of beating Obama. It's not going to be enough to be Not-Obama, just as it wasn't enough to be Not-Bush in 2004. After the havoc that Obama has wrought on the economy and the world, you'd think anyone could beat him just for showing up. Unless you're Charlie Sheen, that's just not the case.
I don't know who's going to step up to wage the fight against Obama in the Dems. So many things could happen from now until Nov 2012, but I just hope we can put up someone who is smart, principled, and who can connect with the people on substance as well as personality.
